The following information will be helpful for you to know what is expected when you work as an election inspector for Grosse Pointe Farms.
Election Day begins at 6:00 a.m. at our five precinct locations where the workers prepare the precinct by setting up voting booths, putting up mandatory signage, checking in ballots and other election supplies. The precinct is ready to go at 7:00 a.m. when the polls open. Each precinct has an assigned Chairperson who acts as supervisor and interacts with the City’s Clerks Office regarding questions and problems.
In addition to our five precincts, we also conduct an AVCB (Absent Voter Counting Board) here in the board room of the City hall. They process all the absentee ballots that have been returned to the City and are sequestered until their work is completed and balanced after the polls close. The starting time is determined by the number of returned ballots. AVCB inspectors also attend training.
The polls close at 8:00 p.m., at which time inspectors complete necessary paperwork, pack up supplies, remove the signage and take down the equipment. This work is usually completed by 9:00 p.m.
The minimum qualifications for becoming an election inspector are being registered to vote in Michigan, legible hand writing and being able to attend a daytime training session, Prefered qualifications are computer skills and prior election worker experience.
Prior to each election, there is a training meeting for the workers where procedures are reviewed. Any new procedures or election laws are discussed and questions are answered. Currently election workers are paid a flat rate of $125.00 for Election Day and $10.00 for attendance at the training meeting. Chairpersons earn $150.00 for the day. Lunch and dinner are provided.
