Election Information Residents may register to vote in person with the City Clerk at City Hall or at any Secretary of State office. The deadline for voter registration for an election is 30 days prior to the election. In order to vote in Grosse Pointe Farms, you must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age, a resident of Michigan for at least 30 days and registered in Grosse Pointe Farms.

Notices for voter registration and absentee ballot applications are published in the Grosse Pointe News, and the City’s quarterly newsletter, the Grosse Pointe Farms Informative Bulletin. Generally, a registered voter may apply for an absentee ballot either in person or by mail to the City Clerk as early as 30 days before and up to 2 p.m. of the Saturday preceding an election. Residents age 60 and over may request to be placed on a permanent absentee voter list. An application will be mailed for an absentee ballot for each election. The voter must return the ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day for it to be counted. Each Monday prior to an election, absentee voters may vote up to 4 p.m. at City Hall. However, those who vote at City Hall may not remove their ballot from the premises.

Elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday of February, May, August and November. Primary elections are held in August and General elections are held in November for all levels of government. To hold a local primary election, the number of individuals seeking public office must be more than double the number of open seats.

The election of Council members and Municipal Judge is nonpartisan.

A Municipal Judge is elected for a four-year term.

A Mayor is elected each odd year election. The Mayor is elected for a two-year term.

Voters elect three (3) council members at each odd year General Election. Council members are elected for four-year terms.

The League of Women Voters sponsors candidate forums and publishes a Voter’s Guide before elections. Copies are distributed at the local libraries and through one of the local newspapers.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Electors must vote at their designated precinct location.
