Meeting Minutes

1.       Those in Attendance: Jon Austin, Peter Waldmeir, Bridgette Murray, Tom Smith. Park Staff – Richard Huhn, Kara Hardenbrook and Rodney Girolami.  Excused absence:  Tony Gatliff, Nadine Pendolino, Marty West Mike Montogmery, Jim Farquhar, Jr.  Guests include Kathy and Ginny Brown of the Grosse Pointe Garden Center.

2.       The meeting minutes from September 2016 were accepted without change.  The regular meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

3.       New Business:

a.       Request from Grosse Pointe Garden Center to include Pier Park in their 2017 Garden Tour:

Kathy and Ginny Brown of the Grosse Pointe Garden Center are requesting to add the Pier Park into the 2017 26th Annual Garden Tour on Friday, June 23rd and Saturday June 24th from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on both days.  The request came after Rodney Girolami gave Kathy and Ginny a tour.  They were impressed with the gardens and different species of trees.  Last year, around 600 people bought tickets for the tour, however, it’s a steady flow of people, not everyone at once.  There are currently 9 tour locations and Pier Park would be the 10th.  The tour would start and be limited to the Rain Garden by the Orten Activity Building (Warming Building), around the triangle garden and around the Community Building.  The Garden Center will contact the Grosse Pointe Farms Beautification Committee to be involved.  They may need volunteers and arrows to point in the proper direction for people to tour.  Peter Waldmeir will make the recommendation to City Council that the Parks and Harbor Committee and the Director, Dick Huhn, approve the Pier Park to be in this tour.  Final approval will not be given to the Grosse Pointe Garden Center until after the December 12, 2016 City Council Meeting.

b.      Proposal to install umbrella on the harbor Observation Deck:

A suggestion was made by the Orten Family Foundation that the Observation Deck needs shade, perhaps something like the umbrellas on the pool deck, for more people to use this amenity.  The Parks and Harbor Committee agreed this would not be the proper place for that type of umbrella due to the high winds on the deck.  A possible better place for the donation would be at the George Gerow Viewing Deck.  The Observation Deck overall needs a facelift.  Parks and Harbor Committee Member, Jon Austin, suggested asking the architectural class at Grosse Pointe South to come up with an idea.  Dick and Shane will discuss what needs to be done and bring ideas back to the Parks and Harbor Committee.

4.        Old Business:  None

5.       Reports:

a.       Director’s Monthly Update – A copy was given during the meeting with a verbal overview.

b.      Kara Hardenbrook made the recommendation for Platform Tennis Court Online Reservations to begin at 6:00 a.m. instead of Midnight due to the inconvenience of the time.  It was also recommended residents may book both courts for an hour and a half block of time per day instead of just one court for an hour and a half block of time.  The Parks and Harbor Committee approved these policy changes.

6.       Other Business: 2017 Parks and Harbor Meeting Schedule TBD
